Can the Mooney of a dried rubber be related to the viscocity of the solution?
Q. I work in a plant that produces solvent-based polyisoprene rubber. We mix the isoprene with hexane, react it to polyisoprene and then steam strip it. The crumb is then dried, baled and packaged. We test the dried rubber every 2 hours to get the mooney value. Since it takes about an hour for the lab to do the test, it is 3 hours between when we could potentially go out of spec until we even know that anything is wrong. Would in-process viscometers (I've seen several solid-state ones online) work with the rubber cement (mixed with hexane, going from the reactor to the stripper)? And, more importantly, would that viscocity (in cP, whatever) be related to the mooney of the dried water-based rubber?

A. I think you might be on the right track. Probably the best thing to do would be to try this offline for yourself. Take a sample from a batch, test the viscosity, then retest that batch once it has been cured. You'll want to do some statistical analysis to see if there is a correlation. Things you might find: 1. That the viscosity measurement does not reliably correspond to the Mooney value. Either it is not senstive enough to be measure accurately or the two properties have nothing in common. 2. That the viscosity measurement does reliably correspond to the Mooney value. You'll still want to monitor Mooney value at the very least until everyone is completely convinced that the viscosity is completely accurate and reliable. From my… [cont.]
