Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn or sugar cane. This article focuses on organic compounds that are not burned as fuel (see also Petroleum product). Two petrochemical classes are olefins including ethylene and propylene, and aromatics including benzene, toluene and xylene isomers. Oil refineries produce olefins and aromatics by fluid catalytic cracking of petroleum fractions. Chemical plants produce olefins by steam cracking of natural gas liquids like ethane and propane. Aromatics are produced by catalytic reforming of naphtha. Olefins and aromatics are the building blocks for a wide range of materials such as solvents, detergents, and adhesives. Olefins are the basis for polymers and oligomers used in plastics, resins, fibers, elastomers, lubricants, and gels. Global ethylene and propylene production are ~110 million tonnes and ~65 million tonnes per annum respectively. Aromatics production is ~70 million tonnes. The largest petrochemical industries are located in the USA and Western Europe; however, major growth in new production capacity is in the Middle East and Asia. There is substantial inter-regional petrochemical trade. Primary petrochemicals are divided into three groups depending on their chemical structure:

Whether Powergrid corporation is better for job than Mangalore Refinery and petrochemicals Ltd? Asked by rajesh s - Fri Nov 16 05:19:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think you are asking about job ( to work ) . which is better to work... If you are an electrical engineer you better prefer Powergrid Corporation. If you are a chemical engineer with petro chemical experience MRPL is better. If you are asking about shares, Power grid looks more promising but it depends on at what price you are entering. Present share price of Rs 156/- seems to be on higher side.MRPL at the present market rate is highly priced. Answered by anjana - Sun Feb 3 13:48:04 2008 What is your opinion on us not dissallowing the remaining petroleum to be used up as fuel?
Q. Please give me your full opinion on this ??? It is quite likely that your grandchildren will be angry that in 2008 we didn't disallow use of the remaining petroleum as a fuel and lock it away for making petrochemicals, from plastics to pharmaceuticals, for which there is no other feedstock. Do you agree? Asked by Lady_Sovereign - Mon Oct 27 19:01:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I agree that reserving petroleum its more unique uses is a good idea, but I disagree with the fact that there is no other feedstock for common industrial chemicals. Nearly all current processes use petroleum feedstocks because they are currently the cheapest feedstocks. Because it is easy and energetically favorable to oxidize hydrocarbons, it is often easiest to start with a hydrocarbon even when making a more oxidized organic chemical, such as acetone. But this doesn't mean that you can't start with a more oxidized feedstock, like cellulose from a plant. It will just take more energy to produce the finished product from inferior feedstocks, but if the price of oil goes up enough, and we have an alternative source of energy, it will… [cont.] Answered by zircalium - Tue Oct 28 01:52:17 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Petrochemicals" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
